One of the most caught and consumed fish in the world is tuna. Indonesia is one of the largest tuna producers in the world. Tuna is a migratory fish across the oceans around the world. Fisrtly, we’re going talk about skipjack. Skipjack is the smallest species in the commercial tuna species. Found in the tropical areas of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Skipjack species is very important for canned tuna industry. It has a characteristic of dorsal blue black (dark) & white belly (bottom) with 4 – 6 black stripes that extend along the sides of the body. The maximum length is 108 cm and maximum weight is 33kg.

Yellowfin is an important species of tuna commonly use in several market for sashimi, canned tuna, fresh fillet, etc. It has torpedo-shaped body with a dark metallic blue back, yellow sides, and a silver belly. Yellowfin has long & bright yellow anal and backs fins. Yellowfin commonly found throughout the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. And it breeds all-year-round. The main suppliers of yellowfin are Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Spain, and Italy. The yellowfin main markets are Japan, Southern Europe, and the United States.

Bigeye has characteristics like yellowfin tuna that are difficult to distinguish. The main feature of this tuna species is that it has a large pair of eyes and a long pectoral fin that usually passes through the rectal fins. Bigeye usually found in all tropical & subtropical oceans, except except in the Mediterranean Sea. Its meat is soft in texture and is not the main source of canned tuna. Mostly, this species produced for steak, sushi or sashimi. One of the main country that produce of bigeye is Indonesia and exports to Japan that will be produce into sashimi.

4.Albacore Tuna

Albacore commonly found in premium canned tuna and has white meat. Therefore, that albacore known as white tuna, but on other hand sometimes it has a little pink meat with a soft texture. Most Importanly, albacore has rich nutrients including omega-3 oil to have an effect on heart. Albacore has bullet-shaped body with a dark blue back and lighter blue-gray sides and belly. They can be found in various oceans such as the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, then Mediterranean Sea between Europe and Africa.  Albacore is also used for steak. The main market of Albacore are the United States, Canada, Japan and Spain.

5.Bluefin Tuna

The last one is bluefin. Bluefin is the largest type of tuna that can live up to 40 years. There are three types of bluefin, namely Atlantic bluefin, Pacific Bluefin and Southern Bluefin. They can be found in the Mediterranean Sea. Based on WWF, the Atlantic bluefin is highly sought-after delicacy for sushi and sashimi in Asia. A single fish has sold for over $1.75 Million. Japan is the main market for Bluefin and they will processed it into sushi or sashimi with fantastic value.
